Raising the crown: clearance without wrecking the outline.

When raising is the right call

• A mature front-garden lime or sycamore near Church Hill or Mill Lane whose lower branches are dragging on the pavement and forcing walkers into the road
• Vehicle-height clearance over a driveway, the standard target is 2.5m for a car, 4.5m for a delivery van, 5.2m for a road
• Sightlines at a junction or at the top of a drive where a tree has grown into the line of view, an issue on some of the narrower village-lane approaches around Coldred
• A tree leaning on the render of a house or garage, lower limbs off, then re-check whether a reduction is also needed higher up

How high to raise

A rule of thumb: after raising, the live crown should still be at least two-thirds of the total tree height. Take too much off the bottom and the tree looks bare-legged; it's also mechanically weaker in a wind because the wind-load on the remaining branches has increased. On an exposed hilltop or farmland-edge plot that load penalty matters more than it does in a sheltered village garden. If the maths says the tree needs to lose more than a third of its live crown for the clearance you want, a raise is the wrong tool, you probably need a reduction, a fell, or to change the target height.

Species notes

• Lime, sycamore, London plane: the classic raise candidates. All three respond well and grow into a good shape above.
• Oak (English/sessile): light raise only, and only outside spring flush. Oaks resent heavy lower-limb work.
• Cedar, monkey puzzle, ornamental conifers: a raise fundamentally changes their form. Owners often regret it. I'll flag it before I cut.
• Fruit trees (apple, pear): often raise-and-thin together for orchard picking access.

Pricing

Single-tree crown raise in Shepherdswell typically runs £220 – £600. Roadside or over-driveway work sometimes needs a small MEWP (cherry-picker) hire for one day and coning of the road, which adds cost; I call this out on the quote rather than absorb it into a vague day rate. Narrow-access Shepherdswell terraces occasionally need bag-out rather than chipping, which adds a small labour line, again, called out up front.
